Dear Mr. Deer
05:21
|
|||
Dear Mr. Deer I waited here for you
In crisp air clear beneath the skies of blue
Through foggy sunlight in the willow glades
I spied the dewdrops upon the ivy braids
Dear Mr. Deer you’ve fled from me before
When you were just a fawn with speckled fur
Now crosshairs and headlights flash a crimson hue
And drip drops of terror from your eyes a-blue
Why do you run, run, run
From what knows you so well?
For when you fight, fight me
You’re fight, fighting yourself
You shed your antlers and they fall
To blossom more beautiful each spring
But I need more than just a fragment of your bone
When you have so much more to give
Dear Mr. Deer I’m drawing closer now
I’m sweat and shiver clashing on your brow
I’m tongue that whispers from a weary brook
I’m fist that raps upon your heart of wood
Why do you try, try, try
To shut, shut, shut me out?
Why must you love what I hate
And hate, hate what you doubt?
You shed your antlers and they fall
To blossom more beautiful each spring
But I need more than just a fragment of your bone
When you have so much more to give

The Sherpa's Elegy
04:39

Your locks of golden hair
are scattered everywhere
around my humble hut tonight.
The Himalayan winter comes
along the wind at a steady run.
All my eyes can see is white
All my eyes can see is white.
You were torn from the cliff
when the blizzard hit.
I watched you plummet through the mist.
Tears clung frozen to my face,
falling snow like curtains of lace,
Terrified I clenched my fists
Terrified I clenched my fists.
I saw your body on the ground
Your spine and legs all twisted around
a limp and lifeless mass of limbs
I tried to carry you back home,
but you lay fastened to the stones
I stayed and wept till I grew numb
I stayed and slept and then grew numb.
They found us cast from head to toe
in alabaster robes of snow,
hemmed by knee-deep ivory tracks.
The frenzied wind sung lullabyes,
beheld us there with stoic eyes
A humble sherpa and his yak
A humble sherpa and his yak.

Through Ivory Teeth
05:06
|

And you, with ember eyes and amber skin
Will leave your footprints for the sun and wind
To erase and smooth like an iron on cloth
To wash your every trace away in thawing snowbroth
Oh, how the winter winds blew
To pilfer the warmth from your womb
Oh, how your sister spoke truth
And screamed "there can be no life in you!"
But cradled in her arms he's lying
An infant downed in light of morning
And you have stifled grief with jealousy
Sifting iron breath through ivory teeth
Striding silent steps on frozen floors
Plundering the son that should be yours
And you, barren as the ice you tread
Will cast but a shadow on the tundra where you rest
Even as you sleep tonight, the sun is circling overhead
A sleepless vulture peering down over dark silhouettes
Oh, how the spirits cursed you
To live as a destitute
Oh, though your heart whispers truth
Still it will never sway you
And cradled in your arms, he's crying
An infant drowned in mother's mourning
And oh, how the summer sun still knows
The boy was never and will ever be your own

You, my cartographer
Mapped every line on these hands
But you no longer recognize
The shifting borders that define them
You, my forager
Gathered every word I ever spoke to you
And stowed in your archive mind
In files and folders, now broken into
When your song turns to sigh,
asleep in your half-dream state
I find you walking till you’ve blistered both your feet
Talking in memories that fade every time you speak
And as your world pulls you inside
You paint a thin veil over your eyes
Your evidence burns and you turn away from me.
You, my wanderer
lost in terrain of my face
My cheeks became desert plains
My wrinkles rivers running through them
When your song turns to sigh,
awake in your half-dream state
I find you walking till you’ve blistered both your feet
Talking in memories that fade every time you speak
You, my cartographer
Mapped every line on these hands
But you no longer recognize
The steady landmarks that define them
